The United States helped Ho Chi Minh in the fight against the Japanese because Japan was their enemy from WW2. Once China fell to communism the US began to worry about Vietnam falling into communism. The French tried to take contoll of Vietnam and many vietnamese people didn't like that, so they formed various groups. Ho Chi Minh was the leader of the the leader of the communist party in Vietnam. The US supported French because they didn't want Vietnam to fall into communism. President Turman and Eisenhower used the domino theory on explaing why the US needs support the anti-communists in Vietnam. The French and Viet Minh reached decieded to dividing the north and southaling the 17th parallel. Ngo Dinh Diem was anti- communism and was then chosen to be the prime minister of the south. Diem had little support in the south. Kennedy sent military advisers to help in south Vietnam. Kennedy sent military coup to overthrown Diem which they did but they also killed. Kennedy was then assasinated and Lyndon Johnson became president. North Vietnamese attacked US ships in the Gulf of Tonkin. The president reacted by bombing North Vietnam. Finally Lyndon Johnson sent 75,000 combat troops to Vietnam to help south Vietnam.
